I’m old enough to remember how popular heroin was in the 1960s. Even though it had been around for many decades, in the 60s the rate of heroin addiction in Utah and across the nation skyrocketed. Then in the 70s its popularity waned as it was replaced by other drugs of choice. But over the last few years it’s been like a very disturbing “deja vu” as I’ve seen heroin addiction in Utah steadily increase. More and more people are coming through the doors at Action Recovery Group for heroin addiction treatment.

Prescription Drug Addiction

Pain Pill Prescriptions

Why the growing surge in heroin use and heroin addiction? It really has to do with the huge number of pain pill prescriptions being written in Utah and across the country. For a variety of reasons, people get on pain meds like OxyContin, Roxicodone and Vicodin. It’s far too easy to get “hooked” on these opioid pain medications, and then when the prescription runs out, or becomes too much of a financial burden, many turn to heroin as a cheaper, more accessible alternative.
